Intro Letter
Hello, I’m Thomas (he/him/his) and I have never been a big fan of writing. It’s just not something that appeals to me. However, there’s going to be plenty of writing in this class so I guess it’s time to buckle down and set some goals for myself. One of the goals I want to set for myself is to get better at avoiding writer’s block. Also, I want to improve on the little things such as grammar, vocabulary, and structure. Finally, I want to have a better attitude towards writing as a whole by the end of the semester.
Last year I was in a creative writing class and just about everyday we would begin with a prompt that we would write a response to for around 10 minutes. The prompts could be anything from poetry to non fiction. I dreaded writing these because I like to take my time with my writing even if I’m doing it the day before. So when I had this time crunch it was tough for me to create something that I was proud of every single time. This is something I want to improve on. I hope to be better at identifying what the prompt is asking of me and be able to turn my thoughts into a good piece of work without feeling like I hit a wall and without taking forever to do it. Being able to consistently put your thoughts into writing is very important and keeping that writing free of mistakes is just as important.
I know this probably seems like a boring goal but grammar, vocabulary, and structure are incredibly important to every piece of writing and I want to be better at all three. Every writer needs to be constantly checking their grammar, assessing their choice of words, and making sure the structure is cohesive and easy to read. Hopefully, by the end of the semester I will be able to understand how to better utilize my vocabulary and hopefully my grammar and structure improve as well.
My final goal for this semester is to try to have a better attitude towards writing. As I claimed in the first line, I’m not a big writing guy. I want to have a more positive attitude towards writing because I believe that a better attitude could help my writing immensely. Everyone knows that you do better work when you care about it and you enjoy it. Therefore, I am going to work on approaching my writing in a healthier way instead of dreading it the entire time. I don’t know if I’ll be able to achieve this goal but I feel like it’s a good goal to have simply because I have always seen writing as a chore or as a burden and that mindset has definitely done nothing to help my writing as a whole. Maybe this class will provide me with a newfound love for writing and if it does, I’m sure my writing will be way better than it is now.
Reflection
In this assignment, we were asked to write a letter to Professor Nisbett that detailed who we are as writers as well as what goals we had for the upcoming semester. I believe that I accomplished all of my goals this semester. I definitely got better at avoiding writer's block. I wrote my entire personal narrative in a little over an hour and a half without stopping which was crazy to me. I am not sure if my grammar, vocab, and structure got better necessarily but they didn't get worse! And when it comes to my attitude towards writing, I think I eased up on it a little bit. I stopped thinking of it as a chore and more of an assignment that I could have a little fun with. Overall, I believe I accomplished all my goals.
