This class challenged me as a writer and I think I was able to grow in many aspects. Starting off with the Intro Letter, I was able to lay out who I thought I was as a writer and set some goals for the semester. Looking back on it, I believe I accomplished all the goals that I wanted to and I’m really glad that this course allowed me to. Also, this was the first assignment that I finished in my college career and I thought that was pretty cool. The blog section was a little tedious at times, however some of the topics were really interesting. For example, the analysis of the George Watsky video. I really enjoyed trying to break down that video and I think it was a perfect choice for this class. The next assignment was the Rhetorical Analysis which I was pretty familiar with. I loved the story that I picked and it was interesting to write about the appeals that the author used on a story that I actually enjoyed reading. The Personal Narrative essay was definitely my favorite thing to write even if it was challenging at times. I’m used to research based writing so it was fun to write about one of my absolute favorite stories from my childhood. The revision process for this essay was really helpful and I am proud of my goofy story. Last and certainly not least, was the Podcast. This was definitely a top two project that I’ve done in my academic career (second only to a presentation about the history of memes). It was so cool to use the sound booth and be able to use my storytelling abilities with my voice instead of on paper. I’m really proud of the product that Mason and I were able to create and who knows maybe I have a future in podcasting.
Overall, I think I did a solid job with my writing in this course. The personal narrative essay definitely allowed me to come out of my shell more as a writer and it really gave me a newfound love for writing stories. As I mentioned before, most of my writing experience has been research and analysis based. In high school, I took a course called AP Research where we picked a topic that we wanted to research and the entire year was spent creating a very long paper with lots of facts, evidence, and drawing conclusions. Although I enjoyed many aspects of this type of writing, it was nowhere near as enjoyable as writing a Personal Narrative. While it was enjoyable, it was also helpful in developing my skills as a writer. This course helped me realize my writing process a little bit more. Although it is still a chaotic process at times, everyone has a different way of doing things and I’m glad I was able to narrow down how I go about writing an essay. I am very glad I was enrolled in this class and I hope I can continue to develop as a writer in my future here at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide).
